Abstract

The saxophone has become a popular instrument, frequent in virtually every artistic and musical field nowadays. Its invention can be explained in the context of the great social, economic, political and cultural transformations in which the bourgeoisie was involved during the transition from the Ancien Régime to the Late modern period.

This aerophone is very a peculiar, since it seems to be the only survivor from the instruments conceived during the Industrial Revolution. Therefore, it could be said that the saxophone was a ‘radical’ invention unlike the incremental ones. It not only became a truly new and original instrument, but also developed into a product that created a new commercial activity.

The present study aims to explain the origin and first days of this instrument, as well as connecting its existence with the vicissitudes of that time and the actions that the nineteenth-century bourgeoisie conducted in favour of or against its accomplishment. It becomes clear that the pure artistic and creative aspects that can be expected when studying a musical instrument will be surpassed in order to examine closely the complex conditions entailed by personal, professional and economic interests. In other words, we offer arguments in order to better understand how the saxophone was invented, why it has survived and which actions or events gave it legitimacy during the turbulent and competitive nineteenth century. To that purpose, a multidisciplinar and cross-curricular methodology has been applied so that the historic, musical, organological, social, economic, etc. cores ideas can interweave.

The birth of the saxophone is bound to the Industrial Revolution, mainly about an improvement in metallurgy –a technological advance to work brass with more accuracy- and its socioeconomic and juridical codification based on the patents system. Furthermore, the survival of the saxophone was viable because it coincided with the new necessities imposed by the rising bourgeoisie on the consumption of culture and music.

Keywords: saxophone, Adolphe Sax, Bourgeois Revolutions, technology, brass.
